Why do we even need to have a decentralise infrastructure for Ai and ML? Is TAO yet another token or solving a real problem?
In a world where a few large companies control most of the ML development, decentralization offers a new way for individuals and smaller organizations to participate to contribute to AI and ML development. Bittensor is a platform that is building a decentralized infrastructure for building and deploying machine learning models on the blockchain. Let’s explore why do we need it, what it is and how it works.
In Crypto space thousands of tokens are being created on a daily basis, many of them are solving real problems as well as there are many who are launching a token to benefit from trends and narratives without real goal of building a product. TAO is solving a real problem of having centralization in machine learning development. With having a decentralised infrastructure individuals or small organisations can also take part in ML development
What is Bittensor-TAO?
- Bittensor is building a decentralized infrastructure where individuals can train and deploy machine learning models using blockchain technology. It enables a larger scale of collaboration among users, who can contribute their computing power and data to improve AI models. The platform uses a native cryptocurrency called TAO, which serves as a reward for users, Miners and validators.
- At time of writing this article, it has a Market Cap of $4.83 B.

TAO Token:
The native cryptocurrency of Bittensor, TAO is used to:
- Pay for AI services.
- Reward participants (Miners and Validators) for their contributions.
- Enable governance, allowing TAO holders to vote on network changes.
How does Bittensor-TAO work?
The Bittensor network consists of thousands of nodes, each running its own machine learning model. These nodes work together to analyze large amounts of data and extract meaningful insights.
- Miners: These are the computers that contribute processing power to the network. They run complex algorithms to train AI models and can be any individual or organization with the necessary technology.
- Users: Users submit requests for information or assistance
- Validators: These are nodes that review the responses generated by miners. They evaluate which answers are the most accurate and reliable before sending them back to the users.
When a user submits a request, miners compete to provide the best response. Validators then assess these responses and determine which one is the most useful based on various criteria.
The Consensus Mechanism
- Bittensor use a consensus mechanism called Proof of Intelligence. This mechanism rewards nodes based on their ability to produce valuable outputs from their machine learning models. The more accurate and useful a model’s output is, the higher its chances of receiving rewards in the form of TAO tokens.
How to become a Miner or validator?
- Check out this doc to become a miner or validator
- Currently, there are 32 validators.
What is a subnet?
- Subnets are specialized nodes within the Bittensor network that focus on particular AI or ML tasks, such as natural language processing, data analysis, image generation or anything.
- Each subnet has a Subnet owner, Validaor and a miner
- Here are 5 subnets
- Root: The root network is a meta subnet that regulates the distribution of block emissions to each subnetwork, currently set at 1 TAO for every block mined. It also functions as the network senate, consisting of the top 12 keys with veto power over proposals submitted by the triumvirate.
- Apex: This Subnet defines an incentive mechanism to create a distributed conversational AI.
- Omron: Omron subnet, building cryptographically verified efficient and intelligent capital networks.
- Templar: Templar seeks to push the boundaries of the combination incentives and distributing training infrastructure.
- Targon: Targon is a redundant deterministic verification mechanism that can be used to interpret and analyze ground truth sources and a query.
- Currently, there are 59 subsets available you can explore every subnet from here
- To create an Subnet check out this doc.

Bittensor represents a significant shift in how artificial intelligence and machine learning can be developed. By decentralizing the process, it allows many individuals and organizations to contribute their computing power and expertise.
